Ethos: Always put the horse's best interests first
Dear All,

My story with miniature horses began when I was introduced to a rescued mini, dubbed "Bertie Basset", on a visit to Highveld Horse Care several years ago.
Not being an experienced horseman, I instantly found myself at ease with this creature that showed all the complex attributes of a horse, but minus the intimidating physical presence that usually accompanies one.

The idea formed to bring a mini into our riding yard at Taratay Stables, to introduce first timers and young children to the wonderful world of horses in an approachable and enchanting manner.

This led us to a Sunday drive in the country and a stop in at a miniature horse breeder who had advertised a foal for sale.
Well, that foal was already gone, but with the owner reacting to recent lifestyle events, the rest of the stud was unexpectedly also up for sale.

So we chose our first mare, Jessie, mostly on looks and temperament. But she would need a companion and Cappucino was similarly gorgeous.

And then we were introduced to Gucci, who proceeded to pop over jumps higher than I had ever managed on my thoroughbred, then stood on a barrel and waved at me with one hoof!

Maybe it was time to take the plunge and start our own stud?

Once you decide to buy your first stallion, the second one is much easier and Dreamer added himself to the order courtesy of some beautiful impromptu in-hand work.

In that week came the call to say that the horses had been entered in the Horse of the Year show and would we like to bring them through?

At the show they were re-united with the remaining mare and stallion we had left behind previously and the conversation went something like this:
(Wife) What were you thinking! You left me alone with a glass of wine and a credit card!
(me) What did you do??
(Wife) Meet Irresistible. He was. and Gatsby wants to come home with us too...

We have since added baby Tai and the pretty girls Ice and Goldie to the herd, which is set to expand again shortly with spring time foals on the way.

Our story is just beginning and you are most welcome to follow our progress on www.robertsonstud.co.za and also via the Robertson Stud Facebook page.

Our intention is to produce excellent horses always, with confirmation, health, character and temperament of paramount importance,
and we will have fun and adventures along the way, as we revel in the glorious presence of many miniature horses.

All of the Best,
Ian Robertson
